Ask any seasoned internet marketer, and they will tell you that the most important thing you can ever do when you’re building an online business is to create email mailing lists or opt-in lists.

In the beginning, every name on any list you build will be that of a prospect, but once you know how to ‘work’ that prospect mailing list properly, you will quickly start to turn some of those prospects into leads and turn them into customers

No matter what kind of online business you run, it is important to understand that there is a huge difference between making money online and building your business.

For example, many people who decide that they want to earn an income from the internet begin their moneymaking journey without a product or service of their own to offer to potential customers. As a result, they start their business doing something like promoting products as an affiliate marketer or by featuring paid advertising on a webpage.

In both of these situations, the marketer in questions might be making money but they are not building their business, because at the very heart of the business building concept is the ability to collect information from internet users who take a specific action to give you permission to send them additional information in the future which in other words is list building.

In this case, the specific action that you need to ask them to take is to subscribe to your prospect mailing list.

When people have chosen to subscribe to your prospect mailing list, they have already made a small commitment to your business. However, at this juncture, they have not made a commitment in the most important way, which is by shelling out their money.

By adopting the tactics and strategies mentioned in this manual, you will be able to convince some of your prospects to spend money with you, and when they do so, they become your customers.

The commitment that they have now shown to your business is much greater and more important, for several reasons;

Do you belong to list building program? If so I have a question for you. Who are you actually building the list for? Are you building it for yourself or a program owner? The answer to these questions are simple, you are building a list primarily for the program owner. Yes, individuals who you bring into the program are below you and you may be allowed to e-mail them every day but that is very rare. While on the other hand the program owner can e-mail to your list at any time and even several times a day.

Most of these list building programs have a free and a pro membership. You can upgrade to the pro membership, for a monthly fee, and increase the amount of times that you are able to mail to your list. But very few allow you to mail to your list daily. So you see through your efforts you’re actually building a list for the program owner.

How much is your time worth to you? How much time do you spend daily advertising to build one of these lists? On average, your time is worth approximately $ 50 an hour. So if you spend one hour each day trying to build your list in essence it is costing you $ 50 a day to build a list for somebody else.

How many sales have you made off of the list you build? Have you been tracking your efforts to the list that you have built? If not, you will never know your success rate for this list. Is your success rate paying for your time to build the list? If not, then you are in a losing proposition. Again because your time is money!

I understand this issue because I was involved in several of these list building programs. I spent a couple hours each day trying to cultivate individuals to join my lists. List Building – Is It Still Relevant On Today’s Web?

Years ago, when I first started in online marketing, all the rage was something called “list building”. I immediately jumped on this subject and started gathering every list building technique one could possibly imagine. It very quickly became one of my most favorite areas of Internet marketing to explore; so much so, that when I reached my first goal of getting 1000 subscribers, I was so pleased with myself, I even wrote an ebook on list building.

But that was then, this is now.

Since that time, online marketing and even the web itself, has changed tremendously. And we are not talking about small changes or minor adjustments here – the web has fundamentally changed from the core up. People simply use the web in a different way than they used it 10 years ago. It has become so much more of a user-friendly place, so much so, that marketing on this friendlier web has become a whole new ballgame.

The question remains: is list building still relevant on today’s web?

The answer is still a solid “YES”, but the “WAY” lists are built have almost changed completely. Not too long ago, traditional list building meant you slapped some sign-ups forms (provided by your webhost or an autoresponder service) onto your web pages and you were in business. Subscribers who signed up to your list or newsletter, would receive follow-up emails from you or your site.

Anyone could do it since it was so straightforward and so simple, almost to the point of being idiot-proof. However, the underlying key to building a successful list was gaining loyalty and forming a lasting relationship with your subscriber. Successful online marketers and list builders will tell you, this was really the hardest part. Communicating effectively with your subscribers over a long period of time is extremely difficult to do and does require gaining some skills, especially in the copy writing area.

So what has changed the list building process?

In a couple of words, three to be precise: social networking sites. These social networking programs and sites have completely changed how lists are built on the web. Actually, these social network sites such as FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube… have made list building as easy as taking your next breath. List building is integrated into these programs so seamlessly, many users are unaware they are actually building a list.

Simply by using these social networking sites any webmaster or marketer can build a list of contacts or subscribers. Call them friends, fans or followers – they are your subscribers and you can easily reach them with your next posting, tweet or video. There are countless teenagers on many of these social networks who have subscribers that number in the 100′s of thousands, even in the millions. And the rate at which they build their list of subscribers, would put many a seasoned marketer to shame.

There are several reasons why this new way of list building is much more effective than traditional list building methods. First, building your list of contacts is fully integrated into these network programs, often it is the main goal or purpose of the program. Seeing how many followers you can get on Twitter has become a world-wide sport – just go ask Ashton Kutcher!

However, from a marketing perspective, using these programs eliminates one of the major drawbacks of marketing on the web – spam. Actually, contacting your list by email is becoming troublesome, even with double opt-in, many of your emails never get through to your legit subscribers because they are blocked by spam-filters and Internet service providers. Using these social programs is a way of contacting your subscribers without the whole issue of spam being considered at all.

Perhaps, an even more important reason to use these social media sites to build your list, has to do with the tricky problem of establishing relationships with your subscribers. These sites make it much more easier to build that long-lasting relationship with your contacts. In the case of YouTube, it can simply mean making a video and talking directly to your subscribers. Communication is direct and immediate. In most cases, there’s no need to acquire additional skills or techniques. Besides, in most of these social network sites, the communication is often more effective because it’s just not one-way, your subscribers can easily communicate back with you.

Same goes for Twitter, which has become the list building tool of choice for many webmasters and online marketers. Twitter is an excellent medium for building your list. It can be used effectively to get your message out to thousands of like-minded followers and have that message spread rapidly around the web. Marketers are now taking advantage of such a system to market online, but be aware abusing this program will get you banned especially if you just use it to send spam. Like any type of marketing on the web, you shouldn’t have any problems if you keep all your communications/interactions real and human.

Another element of these programs which can’t be denied, they are all free. Anyone can use these social network sites to quickly build their list or lists without having to worry about paying for it. Actually, in the case of YouTube, you can become a partner and earn revenue from Google Adsense while building your list.

There’s also no denying these social network sites have changed not only list building, but how we use the web. These programs have a “pooling effect” on all web activity, gathering like-minded individuals into or around certain “pools” on the Internet. These concentrated pools of people can be formed around a certain topic or even around a certain person. These are excellent areas in which to carry out your list-building activities and your online marketing efforts since they provide very targeted prospects. Ones you can easily contact and communicate with by using these social networking sites.

While the old traditional email list should not be forgotten, list building, as we know it, has been changed forever by the introduction of these social networking programs. And as these network sites become more and more popular, they will play an even greater role in all your list building efforts. A role that can’t be ignored or dismissed, especially if you want your list building to be truly effective.

Effective list building and efficient email marketing

For list building, the first phase is to get people to opt in. Once people opt in and got your free report or other free gift, it time to move into the second phase of list building and that is email marketing. The purpose of email marketing is to build up relationship with your list members and monetise from them as much as possible in the most efficient way without driving them away.

 

 

It is important to build relationship with your list because if you don’t, they will forget you or they will opt out of your list and lost that list members forever. Having a better relationship will also lead to higher sales conversion since people will only buy from people that they trust. There are few tips that can help improve relationship with your list members.

 

 

Now the first and most obvious way to improve your relationship with your members is to always provide insightful and valuable content in the form of a newsletter. Treat your list members like real human being instead of just a number figure. To monetise from it, half way through your newsletter, you can embed your URL link that leads to your sales page.

 

Now, one thing when it comes to writing and crafting effective newsletter emails is to make the split your email content into small easily digestible chunks that your reader can skimp easily. When you craft your content, use only 4 -5 words per line so that your list members won’t have to read one long sentence which is similar to reading a textbook.

 

Use as many paragraphs as you can. A good rule of thumb is to explain one point with a paragraph. You can even use one sentence per paragraph if so desired. Craft your emails like a sales page format so your list members can easily digest the information.

 

Keep your emails as short and concise as much as possible.

 

Communicating constantly with your list is the key to build excellent relationship. If you stop communicating with them, you are really throwing a lot of money on the table. Set an interval time to give your list members newsletter every now and then. You can send them a newsletter every 3 to 4 days or weekly. Don’t send email everyday because that can be considered as spamming. You can even prepare a series of emails that can last your fr one year so when a person opt in, you can just rely on your autoresponder service to do all the email sending for you.

 

Now here comes the tricky part. Monetising from your list can be difficult to do because if your over do it zealously, people will see you as an irritating salesman and opt of your list. There are few methods to profit as much from your list as much as possible without driving them away.

 

One aspect of email marketer that you must know is that your list members aren’t just receiving mail from you. They are also receiving hundreds of other emails from other places as well so you must stand out otherwise your list members won’t even know that you send them anything.

 

A good way to solve this problem is to have a catchy headline. Instead of using a boring opening line like “Here is Lesson 1 of your free mini-course”, use headlines like” JANE HILL, I’m shocked at you” or any other thought provoking headline to catch their attention.

 

Some people are too afraid that if they tried to sell their list members anything, they might think their list members will hate them straight them away. So what they do is they keep giving them free stuff and made very few attempts to sell. What happens is that people will be conditioned to expect free stuff from you all the time and will be offended when you try to sell them something. Don’t make this same mistake.

 

This is a big mistake. You are running a business after all and your purpose is to sell. You need to condition your list members to buy things from you. You can use the half self method as I describe earlier. Give your list members some valuable content and if they want to find out more, they can learn more by going to your sales page. When you approach from this perspective, you are doing a half sell by providing your customers value and at the same time selling too.
